2025 Artist Insights: Disneyland Manor Tree Topper
Welcome to Disneyland Manor
A new tree topper and two new ornaments will soon appear to complete our Disney The Haunted Mansion Collection.
What could be better than one tree topper in our Disney The Haunted Mansion Collection?
The only answer to that is TWO tree toppers! For the third and final year of our collection, the Disneyland Manor Tree Topper has arrived in all its haunted glory, along with two new ornaments, The Hitchhiking Ghosts and The Opera Singers.
Keepsake Artists Jake Angell and Orville Wilson are both fans of the attraction and have enjoyed working on the collection. Jake shares, “My family has been to both parks and this is absolutely our favorite ride. We went to Disneyland for the first time two years ago during Halloween season. It was fun to see the Manor with all the Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas decor. I’m always amazed at the details you find each time you ride. One of my favorite parts is the first hall with the stretched paintings. The excitement just builds from there.
Orville has been to both parks as well. “My last time through the ride was at Disneyland, so l have more memories of this one, which helped as I designed the tree topper. Plus, I always do a lot of research so I can get the sculpt details just right. I found photos of when The Haunted Mansion was first constructed and a website with tons of great images that showed all the minute details. I started from the ground up, made the whole building and then added all the rustic details from there.
“One of the main features of the tree topper is the wrought iron railing that goes around the entire building. We did those pieces in stamped metal, so all the patterns will actually be there. And you’ll recognize the weather vane at the top of the decorative roof. It all gives you the feel of an eerie, old, haunted mansion, and it gets even more fun when the tree topper windows all light up and you hear The Haunted Mansion theme. I’m such a fan of the technology.”
Once the tree topper is turned on, the show begins, and that’s when the ornaments begin interacting with lights and sounds of their own. Keepsake Artist Jake Angell brings you this year’s The Opera Singers ornament.
“For this ornament,” Jake says, “we used two lights, one inside the female singer to make her glow and another just below the male singer. I love the ghostly look we’ve been able to pull off with these translucent ornaments.”
Jake did his share of research as well. “In addition to my own experience at Disneyland, I did some deep dives on the internet to find photos and read what historians have said about the early Disney Imagineers who created the ride. The interactivity between the ornaments and the tree topper really gives you a sense of being there with the music and dialogue-it brings back a lot of good memories of our visit!”
Jake sums up the collection for all the artists who have been part of it. “If you are a fan of Halloween, Disney Parks and the fantastic rides-or even just one of those-you will love what we’ve all collaborated on as a collection for these ornaments. You definitely relive the ride each time!”

2025 Artist Insights: Lionelville® LIONEL® Trains
Full steam ahead!
Keepsake Artist Matt Johnson’s tabletop piece celebrates the 125th anniversary of Lionel® Trains.
The long-standing partnership between Lionel® and Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments has always been about celebrating Christmas. This year marks 125 years of Lionel® Trains, so Keepsake Artist Matt Johnson created this tabletop piece to mark the milestone. Matt shared some of his favorite things about the process of creating the Lionelville® Table Decoration releasing in July at Ornament Premiere.
“Our original idea was just to scale up an ornament created back in 2004 by retired Keepsake Artist Ken Crow. But I soon realized that was not going to work, so l actually had to rebuild it to get it to stay within the parameters of the mechanics we wanted.
“Getting everything to function correctly was a challenge for me because I’d never done a magic ornament so complex. We didn’t have digital assets so I resculpted it digitally to rough in the shapes I wanted. It’s like hand-sculpting, pushing and pulling and adding and then using different textures, especially with creating the rocks.
“The most challenging part of the project was making sure the train tunnels would actually work. Our engineer, Samantha Heryford, gave me a 3D model to work from and I used that to make sure everything would fit. It took a couple iterations, but we made it through getting the sizes and mechanics just right. Once we figured that out, then I really got into sculpting the rocks. And there’s a certain point where you get in this flow state and you’re just really enjoying the process. I really liked even just painting it. When you get past the process of getting the mechanics and lights and everything to work, then detailing it all out is the enjoyable part for me.
“And what I really like about this piece is that you can control it. You can have it on without music, so it’s just moving with light. And you can also activate sound, light and motion to create a fun atmosphere. I’m really pleased with how it all turned out, and I love the idea that people will have it in their homes during the holiday season.”

2025 Artist Insights: “Let the Wookiee™ Win”
“Let the Wookiee™ Win”
Amazing new technology brings the scene from Star Wars: A New Hope™ to life.
Sometimes, new technology really is all it’s cracked up to be. Like with this Keepsake Ornament featuring the memorable “Let the Wookiee™ Win” scene from Star Wars: A New Hope™.
Keepsake Artist Orville Wilson explains, “This is something we’ve never done before. Holographic technology has been out for a while, but this is the first time we’ve integrated it into an ornament, along with lights and actual dialogue from the film.
“In this scene, we see Chewbacca™, R2-D2’™ and C-3PO™ in the middle of a Dejarik (holochess) game, where all the pieces are holographic creatures. We sculpted the creatures for our ornament to be smaller than mini ornaments. They’re transparent and in different colors. The creatures are placed on a chip that projects onto a clear sheet. We’re using a really small video screen that’s inside the table they’re sitting at. When it lights up and plays the video of the creatures fighting, the projection causes it to look like a holographic image, like they’re actually right there moving and fighting.
“And as the dialogue from the scene plays, you’ll see lights that pulse near each character when they speak, which creates some motion. It was all a challenge, and it was a huge collaboration between engineering, editorial, the sound studio and the video studio.
“I really enjoyed putting on my engineering hat to build the main structure of the scene. I had to hollow it out to make a cavity for the electronics and then hollow the walls so we could run the electrical wires up through them and into the top where the lights are. After doing that digitally we got a 3D print, and then Kristina Ferguson, our engineer, placed the components, including the video screen and speaker, inside that structure.
“After we showed Lucasfilm and got approval to move forward, I started sculpting the characters and adding in all the fine details on the back, the base, the top and the back walls, including the instrument wall where the panels light up.
“If you’re an avid fan, you’ll notice we did have to make modifications to house the electronics and make sure they all work. Like we lowered the ceiling so we could be hyper-focused on the characters and the scene. And the table is bigger to house the video screen.
“It was a challenge trying to make all the parts sit together so that everything makes sense. And then I really looked at the movie scene imagery to add in extra details. Like the pod shapes along the ceiling aren’t in the scene, but they are on the walls of the ship, so we added those and imagined what was underneath the ship where we cut away at the front of the scene and what would be on the outside of the ship. So, I got to use a little bit of artistic license there.
“I’ll definitely buy a couple of these ornaments myself. What I loved about working on this was that I got to be an artist and add some of my own flair, but at the same time put my engineer’s hat on, too. I’m a bit of an engineer at heart. I like to tear stuff apart and see how it works-then diving in to do that kind of detailed work when you’re actually creating something like this is so much fun for me.”
Orville and team put a lot of research and passion into this ornament, and it shows. Pick yours up at Keepsake Ornament Premiere in July and bring joy to any fan’s galaxy!

2025 Artist Insights: Gnome for Christmas
Gnome for CHRISTMAS Celebrating 5 Years
It’s a big year for Gnaughty and Gnice, and Keepsake Artist Gregor Benedetti is dishing on what’s new with the playful pair.
How do Gnaughty and Gnice celebrate the fifth anniversary of their Gnome for Christmas series? With a special ornament, of course! Keepsake Artist Gregor Benedetti created this limited-quantity papercraft ornament that will be the first to debut the newly designed Gnome for Christmas logo on the back!
Gregor says, “We had the Hallmark lettering studio help us create this official logo, and I’m excited to see its first appearance on this anniversary ornament. We decided to do this papercraft design as a fun celebration of Gnaughty and Gnice. They’re decorating a little gingerbread Christmas tree inside their gingerbread house.
“The ornament itself is built in four layers, and I worked with R.J. Stebbins to get everything technically correct. I come up with the art and how I’d like to do the layers, and then I give him my design files and he’ll construct a 3D mockup. He’s so good at that-and it gives us vital information as far as the amount of wood we want and how the layers will be situated inside.
“I also wanted a fun attachment for this design, so I decided on garland, which is actually a metallic blue pipe cleaner. We’re very selective about our attachments because they can get expensive, so we want to be sure they really enhance the design.
“There’s another little surprise on this ornament-a little mouse friend is joining Gnaughty and Gnice for some holiday festivities. He doesn’t have a name yet, but you’ll also find him on the official Gnome for Christmas fifth-in-series ornament-and you just might see him pop up again in 2026!*
In addition to their fifth anniversary ornament and the official fifth-in-series, Gnaughty and Gnice are having a busy year in the Keepsake Ornament world! You’ll see them front and center on “Baking Up Some Fun,” the collaborative studio ornament releasing in October, and their little sister Sweet Peppermint will also make her first appearance at Ornament Debut. But that’s not all. If you’re a fan of Halloween, you’re in for a treat! Gnaughty and Gnice are starring in their first Halloween ornament, Gnothing But Treats, releasing in July.
Grab their special fifth anniversary limited-quantity papercraft ornament at Ornament Premiere in July-and don’t forget your Early Shopping Day on Friday, July 11!

2025 Artist Insights: Cute as a Button
All aboard!
Keepsake Artist Terri Steiger keeps the Cute as a Button series on track.
When now-retired Keepsake Artist Nina Aubé introduced the Cute as a Button series in 2023, she started with the idea of little hamsters living in a big world, using buttons in creative and festive ways to celebrate the season.
Since Nina’s retirement, Keepsake Artist Terri Steiger has stepped up to ensure the adventures of these adorable characters continue! This year, her new Cute as a Button Special Edition Keepsake Ornament releases at Ornament Premiere in limited quantities.
Taking over another artist’s vision for a series can be tricky, but Terri is making the transition look easy and she’s doing it with her typical humility.
Terri shares, “This is really my first try at doing cute critters. It’s a lot of pressure taking on this series from Nina because she’s been our Keepsake ‘Queen of Cuteness’ and she’s always had such great storytelling abilities. It will definitely be a challenge to fill her shoes!
“I was fortunate to have some of Nina’s sketches to work from, and those were helpful in giving me a good start. The critter in the train car is a new design for me, as is the train car itself with the little guy’s Christmas tree. I thought it would be cute to add a younger critter-and maybe even a sidekick for future ornaments. That’s an idea, but l’m not sure what our plan is yet so no promises!
“The button wheels you see on this Special Edition car will also appear on the train’s engine in the third ornament of the series that releases at Ornament Debut in October.
“I hope we’ll do more train cars in the future-it would be a fun opportunity to do some critter friends in different cars that would hang together-but stay tuned along with me to find out. I just hope to deliver cute-as-a-button characters that will delight collectors!”
