The Ones That Got Away…, Another Peek Into Hallmark History

1980 Holiday Dove and Christmas Kitten

Commonly referred to by collectors as the “test” Dove and “test” Kitten, neither of these ornaments was mass-marketed, however they were sold for a short time in the Kansas City area. Most collectors assume because they were “test” they were never boxed. Not true. Mint in box do exist but are extremely rare. Both ornaments were touted as made from a “specially developed process.” Basically each is a molded, colored piece of plastic that is filled with a hard plastic from the back. The Dove is blue with golden highlights. The Kitten is white with a red bow, and an all-over holly sprig design. Both are low production but the Kitten was produced in much lower numbers than the Dove.

NOTE: This ornament was canceled during production. It was never available for purchase at retail.

Because of the production being canceled, various stages of this design exist including unfilled shells, unpunched ornaments, and unboxed ornaments. Very few ornaments were boxed before production was canceled.

Total production: approximately 200 pieces.
