For French children, Christmas is not complete without a visit from Pére Noél or “Father Christmas.”

The market basket he carries is symbolic of French food and wine to signify the traditional Christmas Eve feast, le Réveillon, typically celebrated in the home or a café that is open all night. His colorful cloak was inspired by the rich history and patterns of French porcelain.

Switzerland Santa

Christmastime arrives across Switzerland’s Alpine peaks and valleys with ringing bells and visits from enchanted characters. One such figure is St. Nicholas, who parades through Swiss towns on his feast day, the sixth of December. Accompanied by men clanging cowbells, St. Nicholas carries a book in which children’s good and mischievous deeds are recorded. Later the children themselves ring bells, going house to house to collect treats. The design of St. Nicholas’s robe illustrates two of Switzerland’s beloved art forms: beautiful embroidery—as seen here in the edelweiss flower trim—and intricate paper cuts—as demonstrated by the charming chalet scene.

Sweden

This festive Santa celebrates Sweden’s charming folk art and Christmas traditions. The wood-carved Dala horse, a favorite holiday toy, is considered a symbol of Sweden. This miniature horse and Santa’s robe both feature the motifs and colors of the culture’s kurbits style folk painting. Swedish children believe that Santa Claus appears on Christmas Eve asking, “Are there any nice children here?” Deserving little ones receive gifts including “jhartkorgar,” or “love hearts,” woven treat baskets which are treasured mementos of the season.

Canada

Santa’s right at home in Canada—a winter wonderland right next door to the North Pole. Home to a mix of cultures, Canada is big enough to include them all in the Christmas festivities, but two of the largest groups are those with English or French backgrounds.

English-speaking families open their presents on Christmas Day and serve a traditional roast turkey dinner. Francophones enjoy their gifts on Christmas Eve before midnight Mass and have a special dinner called “réveillon” (awakening) afterward. All groups seem to recognize Santa Claus as a most welcome bringer of gifts!

Inspired by native materials and arts, Santa’s cloak resembles birch bark combined with quillwork. He carries a basket painted with a bright red Canadian maple leaf. Inside the basket are mandarin oranges, whose arrival often symbolizes the start of the holiday season to many Canadians.

Poland

Once St. Nicholas, known in Poland as Swietgo Mikolaja, makes his visit on December, children and adults throughout the country anxiously await the Christmas holidays. When the first star of the evening appears on Christmas Eve, the long wait ends and Wigilia, the traditional Christmas Eve dinner and celebration, begins. Christmas Day is quietly spent enjoying family and leisure. In contrast, the following day is busy with visiting and extending good wishes for the coming year.

This Santa is holding a straw ornament that commemorates the Christmas star. Straw is often used in Polish decorations as a traditional symbol of prosperity. The intricate flower pattern on Santa’s cloak recalls the folk paper-cutting art of Wycinanki that became popular throughout Poland in the 19th century.

After a church visit, a gift exchange, and a broadcast message from the queen, Christmas Day culminates in a feast. This Father Christmas holds the customary end to that festive meal—plum pudding. The centuries-old dessert, which is often soaked in brandy and set aflame, has many traditions associated with it preparation.

As far back as the 13th century, England’s national identity was tied to the exquisite needlework that was produced there. The embroidery on this Father Christmas’s robe is reminiscent of the scrollwork and nature motifs of 17th- and 18-century decorative items like samples, clothing, and household cloths.
