Artist Insight: In The Studio with Kris Gaughran

The Keepsake Studio spoke with Hallmark Artist Kristina Gaughran about her background and shared a glimpse of an ornament she created for 2025.

Can you tell us a little about your time with Hallmark?

Kris: “ I did a summer internship in 1995, and then when I graduated from college in 1996, I started as an official Keepsake Ornament sculptor! I love creating ornaments that tell a story or mark a special occasion or interest in someone’s life. As a mom, I love pulling the ornaments out and reminiscing about what my boys were into each year.”

What are you looking forward to most about spring?

Kris: “My husband is putting new windows in my office, which will be nice but maybe not super-exciting. But I am really looking forward to everything turning green again—and for the daffodils to come up. They’re my favorite flower because they always mean spring is making its first appearance!”

Can you share the inspiration behind your third ornament in the Mythical Mermaid series?

Kris: “This is a koi mermaid, inspired by a koi fish. These fish are so beautiful with their color patterning, and I knew while planning out the series that I wanted to create a mermaid inspired by them. I remember going to EPCOT on a family vacation and seeing koi fish while at the Japan Pavilion, so I wanted this mermaid to feel Asian-inspired with that same beauty.”

Kris Gaughran grew up watching her aspiring-artist mother enter paintings in 4H competitions, intricately decorate cookies, and never give up on her passion for creating. “She inspired me to do the same,” Kris explains. “From early on, I found so many ways to be creative. Fanciful Friends

Keepsake Artist Kristina Gaughran has been a lifelong fan of mermaids.

“I’ve wanted to design a mermaid ornament for a long time, so I’m really excited about creating this series. I’m planning different ethnicities with beautiful tails inspired by real fish. This year’s was inspired by the mandarinfish. There are so many possibilities with all the amazing, colorful fish in the sea, and I hope to bring something unique and playful to each of these fanciful friends.”

Wondering what next year’s mermaid will be? Kris says, “I‘ll only hint that it includes my favorite color. And I really hope you love them as much as I love working on them!”
