Lionel® New York Central Locomotive

This year marks the 60th anniversary since the debut of the Lionel 2333 New York Central locomotive. When railroading began to convert from steam power to diesel in the 1930s, the full-size New York Central was one of the mightiest new locomotives introduced. People were thrilled and captivated by the sight of this magnificent train both for its great speed and for its stunning art deco-inspired design.

General Motors was responsible for furnishing the new F3’s powerful first-generation diesel engine. When this train was unveiled, railroaders were astounded by its incredible speed, which shattered previous records. By the mid-20th century, diesel locomotives had replaced steam locomotives throughout much of the world. The new engines offered greater flexibility and performance as well as significantly lower operating and maintenance costs.

LIONEL® Chessie Steam Special Locomotive

Because a cat is said to have many lives, the Chessie kitten is the perfect emblem for this locomotive! Built by Baldwin in 1923, it was converted in 1945 to a faster, more powerful T-1 by the Reading Railroad. After being relegated to a scrap yard, it was rescued and restored in 1974—to become one of three locomotives that proudly pulled the American Freedom Train on a 25,000-mile tour celebrating the nation’s 1976 bicentennial. In 1977, No. 2101 emerged as the Chessie Steam Special, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the B&O Railroad. Later, after being severely damaged in a roundhouse fire, the locomotive was restored once more. It is now on exhibit at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.

Lionel® General Steam Locomotive

Often referred to as “America’s Favorite Locomotive,” the General (1872) was offered by LIONEL® in the 1950s. The original General had become famous on April 12, 1862, when Union soldiers captured the locomotive deep in Confederate territory. Before they could reach Union lines, the engine was overtaken by the Confederates-but not before a thrilling chase covering 87 miles! The story was retold in the film The Great Locomotive Chase, released in 1956.
