In a unique celebration of history and national pride, the United States Mint in 1999 began the 50 State Quarters® Program. Each year the Mint will issue five new commemorative quarters honoring each of the 50 states in the order they entered the Union. These quarters will be minted in both Philadelphia and Denver. Thomas Jefferson made one of the great real estate deals of all time. In 1803, the United States paid $15 million to France for the territory between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. This opened the way west for American exploration, settlement, and trade. The Louisiana Purchase inscription and territory outline are on the “tails” side of this quarter dollar. Also pictured are the state bird, the brown pelican, and a trumpet honoring the music of the region.

This quarter is the 18th issued by the United States Mint for the 50 State Quarters® Program.

The American Spirit Collection™ ornament for Louisiana features at its centerpiece a never-circulated quarter dollar honoring Louisiana. The symbols on the ornament, which is made of antiqued nickel, signify Louisiana’s important place in American history.

Steamboat: On January 10, 1812, The steamer New Orleans, commanded by Nicholas Roosevelt (great-uncle of President Theodore Roosevelt), became the first steamboat to successfully navigate the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, Steamboats were a major factor in the growth of New Orleans as a world Port.

Seafood: Louisiana, is the leading state in shrimp and crawfish production and is also known for other seafood products including catfish and oysters.
Flag of 1795: The flag flying when Louisiana joined the Union.

Oil rig: The first transportable, submersible drilling rig was used off the coast of Morgan City, La. It was an industry spring-board to the current offshore rig technology.

Gumbo, that rich stew of many ingredients, is a perfect symbol for Louisiana. This land of diverse influences was claimed by the French in 1682 and named in honor of King Louis XIV. France sold it to Spain in 1762, then regained possession in 1800 before selling the territory to the United States in 1803.

The unique cultural mix is especially evident in southern Louisiana, where Creoles, descended from original settlers, live beside Cajuns, whose ancestors were Canadian refugees. From its Dixieland jazz to its plantation homes to the nightlife on Bourbon Street, Louisiana is one of our most interesting states. And the gumbo is pretty tasty, too!

A traditional Vermont maple syrup harvest is illustrated on the “tails” side of the Vermont quarter dollar along with the state’s motto, “Freedom and Unity.” Vermont is a nation’s leading producer of maple syrup and related products. Most of the state is covered in forests, with the Green Mountains adding to the scenic beauty for which Vermont is famous.

March 4, 1791

Vermont was the first state admitted to the Union after the original 13 colonies. Resistance to English rule began early in Vermont, with the Green Mountain Boys organizing in 1770 to oppose English orders that would have stripped them and their land. Under Ethan Allen’s leadership, the Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga from the English during the Revolutionary War. In 1777, settlers proclaimed Vermont an independent republic, which it remained until statehood.

Forest cover about three-quarters of Vermont, giving the state a rural charm. Vermont ranks 48th in state population and has the lowest percentage of urban dwellers of any U.S. state. Vermont was the first state to outlaw slavery.

PENNSYLVANIA QUARTER

Issued March 1999

Commonwealth, the noble figure atop the Pennsylvania state capitol building in Harrisburg, is the centerpiece for the Pennsylvania quarter dollar design. This coin is the second issued by the United States Mint in its 50 State Quarters Program.

The actual 14-foot statue of Commonwealth, in place, since 1905, was restored in 1998. The statue holds the staff of statehood in her left hand and is extending her right hand in benediction. The dome she adorns was modeled after Michelangelo’s dome of St Peter’s in Rome.

The first-strike ceremony for the Pennsylvania quarter was held at the Philadelphia mint on March, 8 1999.

December 12, 1787

Pennsylvania’s name came from “Penn,” in honor of the father of the state’s founder, William Penn, and “sylvania,” which also means “woodland.” Pennsylvania’s nickname, “The Keystone State,” stems from the state’s position as a crossroads in the original 13 colonies, and for the pivotal role that the state played in the formation of our country.

Pennsylvania is also home to Valley Forge, where General George Washington’s Continental Army held fast during the War of Independence. Also, the Battle of Gettysburg took place in Pennsylvania, and became the single most crucial battle in the Civil War.

PENNSYLVANIA QUARTER

Issued March 1999

Commonwealth, the noble figure atop the Pennsylvania state capitol building in Harrisburg, is the centerpiece for the Pennsylvania quarter dollar design. This coin is the second issued by the United States Mint in its 50 State Quarters Program.

The actual 14-foot statue of Commonwealth, in place, since 1905, was restored in 1998. The statue holds the staff of statehood in her left hand and is extending her right hand in benediction. The dome she adorns was modeled after Michelangelo’s dome of St Peter’s in Rome.

The first-strike ceremony for the Pennsylvania quarter was held at the Philadelphia mint on March, 8 1999.

December 12, 1787

Pennsylvania’s name came from “Penn,” in honor of the father of the state’s founder, William Penn, and “sylvania,” which also means “woodland.” Pennsylvania’s nickname, “The Keystone State,” stems from the state’s position as a crossroads in the original 13 colonies, and for the pivotal role that the state played in the formation of our country.

Pennsylvania is also home to Valley Forge, where General George Washington’s Continental Army held fast during the War of Independence. Also, the Battle of Gettysburg took place in Pennsylvania, and became the single most crucial battle in the Civil War.

The heroic ride of patriot Caesar Rodney is commemorated on the reverse of the Delaware quarter dollar, the first issued by the United States Mint in its 50 State Quarters Program.

Rodney’s historic two-day horseback ride began July 1, 1776, Although seriously ill, he rode 80 miles from Dover, Delaware, to Philadelphia to cast the tie-breaking vote that enabled Delaware to approve the Declaration on Independence.

The first-strike ceremony for the Delaware quarter was held at the Philadelphia Mint on Dec 7, 1998, exactly 211 years after Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constition in 1787.

Delaware is also rich in history. Algonquian tribes lived on its fertile coastal plains long before Henry Hudson first sailed into Delaware Bay in 1609. The bay and river were later named after Lord De La Warr, an early Dutch governor of Virginia.

With all their rich heritage, however, Delawareans still take their greatest pride in being “The First State” to ratify the U.S. Constitution, the document that protects the founding principles of our nation.
