Ornament Spotlight: Rocking Horse Memories
Timeless Traditions
A favorite of fans and kids alike is coming back this year.
For his first series as a Keepsake artist, Matt Johnson looked to the past: “Rocking horses have such a rich history associated with children’s toys and Christmastime,” he says.
And for Keepsake Ornaments, the Rocking Horse series was one of the most popular series ever produced running for 16 years starting in 1981. As he approached the series for 2020, Matt says it felt like a good time for a refresh.
For his new series, Matt used a combination of materials to create his rocking horse, like formed metal to create the stirrups and embroidery thread for the tail and reins. Each year, the horses will be painted in different colors and patterns and adorned with different embellishments.
Whether you’re looking to start a series in honor of your newest family member or are just a fan of the childhood classic, this new tradition is sure to leave your tree looking as timeless as the horses that adorn it.

Ornament Spotlight: Traditional Clapboard Two-Story
A Dream House
Keepsake Artist Don Palmiter brings an early 1900s aesthetic to Nostalgic Houses & Shops #37.
Don starts out just as a builder would when creating the dimensions and detail of this long-running series.
“After creating a blueprint, I build the basic frame of the houses and buildings with wood–all the doors, windows and most of the trim are also wood.”
From there, it only gets more detailed. He covers the wood frame in wax so he can sculpt out all the fine details of the house or building to make them feel as realistic as possible.
“Then I build all the furnishings with the same wood and wax,” Don explains. “Once the prototype is finished, I break it into several parts for molding.”
“I always try to make the furnishings feel as though they tell a story of what might be going on for those people who live, work or shop in all the different businesses and houses.”

Ornament Spotlight: Disney Fantasia
Still Magical After 80 Years
Lifelong Disney fan and Keepsake Artist Ken Crow adds magic of his own to a Mickey classic.
Combining his love for Disney with the timeless wonder of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” Ken set out to make an ornament as magical as the classic Fantasia vignette from 1940, creating a living scene from the movie that has just as much personality as the animated characters in it.
“If an ornament looks predictable and acts like a machine, then that’s what people will think it is. And that’s not all that magical,” he explains. “But the ornament’s brooms all have this jiggle that makes them look like they’re lifting the buckets as they hop up the stairs. And Mickey really does look like he’ reaching to direct everything. I’m really, really happy with how everything turned out.”
With a press of a button, watch the enchanted brooms go about their work, carrying buckets of water up the steps to music from the animated short, while a coordinated light show immerses you in the ornament’s fantastical scene.

Ornament Spotlight: Gingerbread Carousel & Sweet Santa
Exclusive Treats
You can look forward to a tasty new ornament at this year’s Keepsake Artist Signing Events.
When choosing a concept for this year’s studio ornament, Keepsake Artist Edythe Kegrize wanted to give her fellow artists a chance to show off what they can do.
“Immediately, I thought of cookies,” Edythe says. “Everybody loves baking at Christmas, and I’ve always admired the gingerbread competitions where people have spent hours upon hours and have all these wonderful creations on display.”
The result was the Gingerbread Carousel, which features creative treats from each artist in the studio. Keepsake Artist Terri Steiger created this year’s club-exclusive companion piece, Sweet Santa. Fresh from creating his gingerbread carousel masterpiece, it looks like Santa is rewarding himself with a treat of his own.
“I wanted him to look like he was getting in on the cookie decorating action,” Terri says. “Santa also has frosting-like decorative details that are a nod to gingerbread cookies.”

Ornament Spotlight: Once Upon a Christmas
Time to Rest
Santa’s long Christmas ride comes to an end with this year’s Once Upon a Christmas #10.
“Some fans have said, ‘You can’t end it; it’s my favorite series!’ But when the story’s reached its conclusion, what else can you do?” says Keepsake Artist Tom Best.
Together with Robert Chad and Jim Kemme, now retired, this trio has been recreating Santa’s Christmas process for the past decade. This year’s ornament features Santa sitting in his easy chair, finally able to take a break after a busy night of gift-giving.
In addition to the final ornament in the series, this year also includes a companion piece for fans. With another successful Christmas in the books, Santa dances into the new year with Mrs. Claus, his pocket watch lighting up as midnight strikes.
Connect these ornaments to your Magic Cord, along with the other ornaments in the series, to enjoy the entire tale of Santa’s Christmas adventure displayed on your tree.

2020 Video: Artist Insights (Playful Penguins)
All clear for takeoff this Christmas with Keepsake Artist Kris Gaughran’s Fly the Coop Ornament! These little guys are sure to bring the cuteness to any tree they land on this year.
Kris loves working on these playful penguins each year and we all just can’t stop smiling looking at this adventurous trio. Kris was asked what she thought her penguins might be doing right now and she said, “In tough times, my penguins like to cheer others up! I can see them going house to house and creating something in each yard as a gift for each of their friends to enjoy!”
