Featured Artist – Anita Marra Rogers
See how two holidays came together to make a fun new series as Keepsake artist Anita Marra Rogers brings her love of Halloween to the Christmas tree.
Horses, dogs and unicorns—typical subjects for children’s artwork. But Anita Marra Rogers didn’t draw like a typical child. Her mother quickly recognized that early talent, and she signed Anita up for oil painting lessons. At age 19, Anita used those paintings in her portfolio when she applied for a job with Hallmark. As good as those paintings were, she was turned down.
A few years later, a Hallmark sculptor looked at those same paintings of seascapes and landscapes. He saw talent. He told Anita that she simply wasn’t doing the kinds of images Hallmark wanted. He invited her to come in and see what the Hallmark Artists were working on—whimsical animals, warm Christmas scenes, wintry landscapes. Anita tried her hand at one, sculpting a deer and a bunny looking sweetly at each other over a snow bank. As soon as her friend saw it, he told her that her Keepsake Ornament career had begun.
Hallmark wasn’t Anita’s first sculpting assignment. As a child, she made animal shapes out of cotton candy for her brother and sisters. There’s still a touch of sweetness to every Keepsake Ornament she creates.

There are lots of details tucked into this spooky Halloween scene, so we went to sculptor Anita Rogers to learn about the inspiration for her design:
“Each year, I’ll be creating a different pumpkin with a different Halloween character, and this first one is a cute little witch. Instead of the moon, I put her in front of some wispy clouds and gave her some sparkle. I actually designed her to look like my daughter when she was little. My daughter’s older now, but she still has long brown hair and green eyes, so this little witch kind of reminds me of her a little bit! I put her in a purple dress because it’s my favorite color and I think it looks pretty good with the orange.”
Next year’s jack-o’-lantern is a very different take on another traditional character. Fans of this series will have to wait a little longer to see what details are in store!

2013 Local Club Dinner and Gift
As the 1,400 attendees entered the Crown Center Exhibit Hall on Friday night, each was given a special edition, repainted version of the 16th ornament in the A Pony for Christmas series and a WIZARD OF OZ™ pin back button featuring the upcoming “Were Off to See the Wizard” tabletop piece.

Shortly after everyone had settled in, Hallmark Production Designer, Steve Goslin, dressed in full traditional highland dress and playing the Great Highland Bagpipes, lead a procession of Wizard of Oz costumed attendees in through the main door and up on to the stage. As each individual was introduced, they took the stage identified their self and the character they represented, and said where they were from. At the conclusion of the procession, Dave Hall welcomed everyone to the event and made a few opening remarks. After he finished his speech, dinner was served. The menu featured a dinner salad with ranch dressing, barbecued beef, Au-gratin potatoes, steamed baby carrots and asparagus and chocolate cake. As people finished their meal Jamie Lockard and Tim Stanley hosted a Q&A secession with the Keepsake Studio artists. The evening concluded with the announcing of the runner-ups and winners of the unannounced costume contest and the awarding of the table centerpieces to the individual at each table that had an “X” under their seat.
*NOTE: This ornament was issued in limited-quantities and only available as a dinner gift at the 2013 Keepsake Ornament club event.

2013 KOC Event Register-to-Win Door Prizes
During the 2013 KOC event this weekend, Hallmark gave away 32 event exclusive repaints (8 each of 4 designs)*, eight “Countdown to Christmas Tabletop Clocks” and one Autographed Sports Ornament four time a day for both days of the event. Winners were posted at: 9:00am, 10:00am, 1:00pm & 2:00pm.
The four designs include: “Toymaker Santa”, 9th in the series; “Sterling Rose”, 25th in the “Mary’s Angels” series; “Santa Certified”, 1st in the series and “Puppy Love”, 23rd in the series.

In Loving Memory of our beloved son Stephen “Dido” Pierce
I was awaken in the wee hours last night, it was oh so quiet and I laid in bed not making a sound and not moving a bone. It was the most quiet I have heard in days, I laid there in hopes that I would hear a sound that reminded me of Stephen.
I was laying oh so silent wishing that I would hear his chirp, his neigh, or simply the sound of his feet hitting the tile floor as he jumped, hopped and danced towards the kitchen as he had done thousands of times in the middle of the night and early mornings, or the simple sound of his fidget falling to the tile floor as he approached the kitchen.
Getting to our doorway his presence would then alarm the dogs and then they would began to bark. But lately Stephen was not making the dogs bark. He was simply sitting at his chair at the kitchen table and if either Marc or I was not out there within minutes he would begin to chirp for a mid-night meal, breakfast, a drink of juice, or simply company. But those sounds that I was wishing for did not come tonight. As we all know Stephen was so full of love, never once did he display any violent behaviors, never raised his hand in anger, never uttered an evil word.
Everywhere Stephen went he showered those around him with love and affection, he would reach out and grab someone’s arm to smell them or their hair. Weather we were at school, the grocery store, at a meeting, at therapy or visiting somewhere, Stephen emitted total love, respect and affection, he was content. He treated people exactly like we all should do, he was not afraid to put his guard down and show his heart.
As I continued to lay in bed I began to realize how lucky, fortunate and blessed Marc and I have been to have had these eight years with Stephen, he gave our lives true meaning. He made us work hard, he tested our nerves, and most of all he showed us the true meaning of love, he taught us how to care for others, he taught us about Stephen and to stand up for what is right, we are oh so thankful and grateful for knowing and growing with Stephen. Because of him we are better human beings. I know that everyone who ever knew, worked or sat with Stephen will go away with a little bit of him in their hearts. And if there is anything to learn from Stephen’s life, it is that love is endless.
There will be those times when I do hear those familiar sounds in the middle of the night when it is quiet and dark, or when I am out working in the yard or just sitting on the sofa and I will know who it is and I will smile.
