A ho-ho-whole lot of help
Read how every artist in the Keepsake Village contributed to this year’s Santa’s Workbench studio ornament.

As part of our big 50th anniversary celebration, the Keepsake Village has been hard at work collaborating to create a very special studio ornament depicting Santa’s Workbench, shown above.

As you know, these studio-created ornaments are a team effort. With the merging of so many details and artistic styles, along with the number of design decisions to be made, these studio pieces take time to develop. This one, for example, was started in July of 2021 when Tom Best created the initial concept.

Anita Marra Rogers, the lead artist for the piece, was responsible for taking the idea and determining which elements would be designed by which artist based on their specialties.

Each artist in the Keepsake Studio had a part in it, so I wanted to make sure a little of everyone’s personality or styling came through,” she tells us. From traditional sculptors to artists who create computer renderings, Anita wanted to bring together all the aspects of the studio.

Hearing her talk about the process might make your head spin. But, thankfully, she had Art Director Kurt Gaulke to help determine how each part of the ornament’s intricate design could work together in harmony.

After the concept was chosen,” Anita says, “Robert Hurlburt crafted the structure of the whole thing, and Tracy Larsen was assigned to sculpt Santa in the same styling he has used for past club-exclusive ornaments.

Tom Best chimed in to say that “the basic idea of Santa at his workshop drafting table came from Kurt, our art director, along with Jim Tronoski.

And if you’re thinking the idea seems like the perfect fit for a 50th anniversary piece, you’d be right. The assortment of toys and ornaments displayed across his desk were all meticulously designed by artists throughout the studio.

Every item at his drafting table is a nod to past ornaments throughout Keepsake Ornament history,” Tom adds.

While discussing this undertaking, Anita let us in on a sneak peek you won’t want to miss

On top of Santa’s desk, you’ll find some drawings he’s been working on for future products,” she says.

That’s right. You won’t just have an amazing ornament created by the entire Keepsake Studio, you’ll also get a glimpse of ornaments yet to come.

“A true labor of love.” For Keeps 22 Spring 2023: 7.

NOTES:

  • Issued in celebration of Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments 50th Anniversary.
  • Little Puppy Love is Anabella, a friend of Anita’s.

Announcement: Artists Retirement

Celebrate Our Keepsake Village

Here in the Keepsake Village, we’re all about celebrating milestones and memories, and now we’re celebrating some of our dear friends and colleagues.

Keepsake Ornament Artists Joanne Wright, Robert Hurlburt, Tracy Larsen, Anita Marra Rogers, Rodney Gentry and Nina Aubé each has announced their retirement. Collectively, these six artists have a combined 238 years of service, knowledge and expertise at Hallmark. We’re very thankful for the artists’ years of creative work-just as we’re thankful for the great enthusiasm with which it’s been met by our Keepsake fans and consumers.

This isn’t an ending; it’s the beginning of an exciting next chapter. Our retiring artists will have more time with family, more time to travel, more time to pursue the directions that their creative minds always have led them in. And we’ve not seen the last of them! All are invited to continue contributing along with the larger Keepsake Artist community by creating exciting new content, including fan-favorite series and characters. Likewise, we in the Keepsake Village look forward to the next 50 years as we continue to infuse the studio with new talent, artistry and innovation that we can’t wait to share with all of you!

Ornament Spotlight: Cute as a Button

Cute as a Button

When Keepsake Artist Nina Aube was little, so were her pets. Growing up in a small apartment in Chicago, she enjoyed creating clothing, furniture and vehicles for all her little critters, using everyday objects like candy boxes, spools–and buttons!

Tiny pets are dear to my heart. I had a lot of hamsters growing up, and I’ve always found their perky, cuddly faces and gentle dispositions to be especially adorable.

For this series, you’ll see these happy little hamsters using buttons of all shapes and sizes in creative and festive ways to celebrate the season!

Artist Insights: 2022 Cookie Cutter Christmas

Hallmark sat down with Keepsake Artist Nina Aubé to discuss her 2022 Cookie Cutter Christmas #11. Enjoy!

Nina Aubé

Nina: “He’s engaging in every kid’s most anticipated holiday activity… opening presents on Christmas morning! He’s in his red jammies, which look just like the red flannel footie pajamas my two sisters and I had when we were kids.

Nina went on to say, “since sweets are an integral part of the series, the tree is a 3-tiered sugary cupcake with red licorice garland, centered on a peppermint taffy rug. I don’t have a photographic memory, so of course needed to buy some licorice while I was sculpting this one for ‘research purposes.’”

Nina: “the cookie cutter is a present with a bow on top, which echoes the shape of one of the colorful gifts under the tree. The 3D shape is created digitally. I gave a sketch to (fellow Keepsake Artist) Rodney Gentry, who created a 3D prototype from the drawing. The scene inside is sculpted by hand. I work in a very firm wax-based clay, which needs to be warmed up first, so it’s pliable enough to rough out the basic forms. Once the clay cools, it holds its shape for even the tiniest details, which I carve into with various tools.” We are still in awe of the talent of Hallmark’s Keepsake Artists, and constantly reminded, it truly does take a (Keepsake) Village to bring these beloved ornaments to life!

The Sweet Lil’ Mouse miniature ornament is the SAME little mouse friend from the series, in miniature form!

Nina: “I love the smaller version, it makes a really cute complement to the larger series. The mini is all about sweets as well, so he’s about to nibble on a yummy star shaped Christmas cookie.”

Nina went on to say, “this is the second time the mouse is making an appearance in miniature form. The first was as a part of 2018 KOC-exclusive collaboration Let’s Build a Snowman! ornament.” This ornament was delivered to 2018 KOC members in their Dream Box and featured characters from the Frosty Friends, Snowball and Tuxedo, Cookie Cutter Christmas, and Snow Buddies series. Nina is super excited as this is the very first time our mouse friend is an ornament all on his own!

What do you think? Will you be adding the Cookie Cutter Christmas #11 or the miniature Sweet Lil’ Mouse ornaments to your collection when they release at Ornament Premiere next month?
