Deb started off her presentation by talking about Hallmarket, A Hallmark Art Fair which showcases the creative talents of over 100 Hallmark employees’, including: artists, photographers, sculptors, designers, and photo stylists . [This is the artists’ personal work outside their jobs with Hallmark.] This years fair will be held Saturday, September 27, in Crown Center Square by the ice rink, from 10 AM – 5 PM. Purchases may be made by cash or check, directly to the artist.

During her presentation Deb shared that Linda Sickman has fully retired. As a result of Linda’s retirement, Deb has taken over the ‘A Pony for Christmas’ series. She went on to say that she has always loved horses and is looking forward to working on this series. In closing Deb revealed that next years design features a circus horse.

A Pony For Christmas*
18th in the series
By Debra Nielsen.

*Note: Although pictures weren’t shown at the event, I have included a previously released picture of the 2015 ‘A Pony For Christmas’ ornament, that was included in the 2014 Dream Book event Sneak Peek presentation, to help individuals visualize what it looks like.

While acknowledging his wife Karol, who accompanied him to the event, Don shared a interesting piece of trivia: The Victorian Inn (Karol Inn), 19th in the Nostalgic Houses and Shops series, is named after her.

Don then went on to recount about his career with Hallmark. He said he was recruited during his senior year of high school after Hallmark saw the portfolio he had prepared for his college admissions. One week after graduating from North Kansas City High School he started working at Hallmark.

In the late eighties Don came up with the idea for the ‘Classic American Car’ series. Three years after presenting his idea, the series was launched. As a result of having worked on this series for so long, his Hallmark colleagues nick named him the ‘Wheel Guy’.

In addition to liking cars Don also likes architecture. This year’s edition to the ‘Nostalgic Houses and a Shops’ series, ‘Andy’s Cars,’ is named after his wife’s uncle, who owned ‘Andy’s New and Used Cars’. Don also said that we will probably see the name ‘Mollie’ incorporated into the name or design of a future building as this is his granddaughter’s name. [Could this be a hint about what he is working on for 2016?]

Don concluded his speech by talking about his impending retirement. Currently he is working on designs for 2016, after which he will officially retire and then move to Tulsa, OK to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Once retired he may still collaborate with other artists on future ornament designs. Likewise he said he hopes to be included in future KOC events.

Event Recap

At the Local Club Dinner event in Issaquah, WA, Don and Matt each gave a personal insight into one of their 2014 Keepsake ornaments and shared a Sneak Peek of one of their 2015 Keepsake ornaments.

Matt started the program by saying he enjoys designing snowmen characters. He then talked about ‘I Melt.’ one of the magic ornaments he has designed for this year. He said that when he first started designing this ornament, he was thinking of Johnny Cash and over time the snowman evolved or ‘melted’ into it’s final design.

Since Matt enjoys fishing, he choose ‘Gone Fishing,’ a cute whimsical ornament for his 2015 Sneak Peek. This ornament which combines both of his interests was developed after a recent fishing trip that he went on with Keepsake artist Tom Best.

Matt concluded his presentation by saying, that although he is not a series artist by nature, he is not opposed to taking on a series if the right inspiration comes along.

Gone Fishing
By Matt Johnson.

Don took the stage and discussed, in depth, his obvious love for cars and how he believes: “ornaments are not only memories but should each tell a story. It’s the memories and the stories they tell, that make the ornaments special.” Don continued: “although he has enjoyed his entire career at Hallmark and all the series he has created, he had the most fun during the 10 years period that he designed the ‘Kiddie Cars’ series-not just designing the cars but also traveling and getting to meet collectors and seeing their pedal car collections first hand.”

Don then spoke about his ‘2014 Chevrolet® Corvette® Stingray™’ which will be available in December. After stating that this piece has been in development for several years, He described, in fascinating detail, the process of working with car manufacturers, from the early concept stage through the entire development process, in order to time the release date of the ornament with that of the actual 2014 C7 Stingray.

Don also spoke about his contributions to the ‘Nostalgic Houses and Shops’ series. He said many of the buildings in this series have personal touches that connect to his own life, family members and people he has met along the way. As an example he referenced how the ‘Town Hall and Mayor’s Christmas Tree’ piece list him as the mayor.

He then talked about next year’s ornament, the ‘Keepsake Korners Pet Shop.’ As an interesting piece of trivia he mentioned that the design incorporates a couple of miniaturized versions from Anita Marra Roger’s ‘Puppy Love’ series.

1947 Chevrolet® Pickup

With its gracefully sweeping fenders, massive
front grille, and abundant chrome accents, this
1947 pickup marked the end of the Art Deco Era
in Chevrolet® truck design. Remembered as one
of the best-looking Chevy trucks ever, this
distinctive prewar model was taken out of
civilian production during World War II but
made a triumphant return afterward. Billed at
the time as America’s “Most Popular Pickup
Truck,” it was replaced (through not necessarily
outclassed) by the larger, more utilitarian
“Advanced Design Series” introduced later in
the same model year.

Wreath of Memories

Keepsake Ornament Club has a lot to celebrate after twenty-five
years—friends made, collections built, and memories cherished.
Reflecting the lives of collectors, Keepsake Ornament Club has
grown and changed through the years, adding new chapters to
the story every holiday season with sneak previews, special events,
and member-exclusive ornaments. As we remember some of our
favorite moments from years past, we want to thank some of our
favorite people—collectors—for twenty-five years of great memories.

This special edition wreath ornament—sculpted by Keepsake
Master Artist Don Palmiter and modeled after the 1987 Wreath
of Memories ornament given to KOC Charter members–
commemorates twenty-five years of Hallmark’s Keepsake
Ornament Club. What an honor it has been to share our love
of ornaments with you and what a wonderful reason to celebrate!
