In eighteenth-century Napels, leading artists created elaborate Nativity scenes filled with elegantly costumed figures.  The craftsmen included townspeople and travelers in sweeping panorama which depicted the Holy Family surrounded by adoring shepherds, angels, and the Magi.

The beautifully sculpted angel with her color robe reflects the rich, Neapolitan tradition of créche-making.
